Broomhall Way, Worcester Footbridge

Handrail Lighting Scheme

The Broomhall Way Footbridge, which spans the A4440 Southern Link Road in Worcester, is open to pedestrians and cyclists. This landmark bridge provides a vital connection between the commercial and residential developments to the south of the A4440 and Power Park in St Peter’s to the north.

As part of a wider infrastructure improvement project, this bridge—alongside two additional bridges, a new underpass, and an expanded shared pedestrian and cycle path between the Ketch and Powick roundabouts—greatly enhances sustainable travel options in the area.

Working once again in collaboration with our partners at Lighting Integration, we developed and delivered a bespoke handrail lighting scheme using our Pictor system. From the outset, the design team was involved in the project’s early stages, allowing for coordinated planning and seamless integration with the bridge’s architectural and structural elements.

The completed lighting scheme provides safe, comfortable illumination for pedestrians and cyclists while preserving the surrounding environment. The Broomhall Way Footbridge now stands as a showcase of collaboration, technical precision, and thoughtful design—demonstrating how early engagement and integrated planning can deliver exceptional results.

PICTOR Luminaire

Environmental sensitivity was a key consideration throughout the design process. To minimise light overspill and protect the night sky, the lighting design was developed to achieve a uniform P4 lighting level along the full length of the crossing.

With over 300 PICTOR luminaires incorporated within the stainless-steel handrail, careful planning of the electrical circuits and control systems was essential. The final installation includes:

  • 15 SELV (24V) circuits

  • 4 stainless steel control enclosures, each housing key control and monitoring equipment

  • A single 230VAC power supply, routed from one side of the bridge only, to connect to all control enclosures
