Elektra 483 G3 Linear Lighting System: Engineered for Continuity, Built for Movement

Elektra 483 G3 | Delivering seamless light—even where the structure itself must move.

The Elektra 483 G3 represents a major advancement in linear LED lighting, specifically engineered for integration within 48.3mm cap rail handrails while also serving as a highly effective linear plinth lighting solution.

Derived from the widely adopted 48.3mm cap rail standard, the system aligns seamlessly with architectural and structural norms. For applications requiring a reduced diameter, the complementary 424 system is available for 42.4mm cap rails, ensuring consistency across a wide range of project specifications.

A rare achievement in continuous linear lighting

Continuous linear lighting over long distances remains a relatively rare achievement. The inherent challenges—maintaining consistent illumination, ensuring structural integrity, and delivering reliable electrical performance across extended spans—have historically limited such systems.

The Elektra 483 G3 overcomes these barriers, providing a truly continuous linear solution suited to demanding environments including bridges, walkways, and large-scale architectural schemes.

Dual functionality: handrail and plinth applications

A key strength of the Elektra 483 system lies in its versatility. While purpose-designed for cap rail integration, it can also be deployed as a plinth lighting system using the same U-shaped aluminium sections.

This dual functionality enables a unified design language across a project, simplifying both specification and installation while maintaining a consistent visual aesthetic.

Generation 3: designed for real-world conditions

The Generation 3 (G3) system was developed to address one of the most critical challenges in external linear lighting: thermal expansion and contraction.

Outdoor environments can experience temperature variations exceeding 40°C annually, with fluctuations of 15°C or more within hours. These changes introduce significant stresses across materials.

Bridge structures in particular combine multiple materials—steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, and polymers—each with different coefficients of thermal expansion. Expansion joints within bridges can accommodate movement of up to 70mm over long spans. When handrails and integrated lighting systems are added, these differential movements become even more pronounced, especially across lengths of 50 metres or more.

Thermal expansion comparison

Material Coefficient of Thermal Expansion Expansion per m over 40°C (mm)
Copper 16.4 0.656
Aluminium 23 0.92
Polycarbonate 67 2.68
Stainless Steel 17.3 0.692

Over a 10-metre span, the difference in movement between a stainless steel rail and a polycarbonate diffuser can approach 20mm—a significant engineering challenge that must be addressed to ensure system longevity and performance.

Engineering for expansion

To accommodate these forces, the Elektra 483 G3 incorporates a series of carefully engineered solutions:

  • Component Mobility

Internal luminaire components are designed to allow controlled movement, reducing stress caused by expansion and contraction.

  • Sliding Diffuser Joints

The diffuser system features sliding joints that absorb linear movement while maintaining a continuous visual appearance and consistent light output.

  • Material Compatibility

The system is engineered with a full understanding of how different materials behave over long distances, ensuring durability in demanding environments.

Powering Long Spans

Supplying power across extended continuous runs presents an additional technical challenge, particularly in bridge applications where uninterrupted sections can exceed 50 metres.

The Elektra 483 G3 addresses this through:

  • Integrated Additional Circuit Wiring

Extra conductors are incorporated within the rear of the luminaire, ensuring consistent power delivery throughout the system.

  • Reduced Voltage Drop
This approach minimises voltage loss over distance, maintaining uniform illumination across the entire installation.

Built for modern infrastructure

The Elektra 483 G3 is more than a lighting solution—it is a purpose-engineered system designed for modern infrastructure, where durability, performance, and visual integration are essential.

By addressing the complexities of long-span installations, thermal movement, and multi-material interaction, it establishes a new benchmark for continuous linear lighting.
